This accompanying clinical course for NU 428 and NU 426 builds upon a liberal arts foundation and prior junior level nursing coursework, providing experiential learning opportunities that reinforce and expand students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes in caring for individuals, families, and communities experiencing acute health alterations and related stressors. Aligned with The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education and the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards for Professional Practice students apply advanced clinical reasoning and judgment to manage acute manifestations of disease across diverse populations. Emphasis is placed on the application of the nursing process and clinical judgment model to deliver safe, high-quality, person-centered care, integrating current evidence and utilizing healthcare technologies to enhance clinical decision-making, clinical judgment, and improving patient outcomes. Students will implement strategies to reduce risk and improve care processes in acute care environments. The course supports the development of interprofessional communication and collaboration by requiring students to engage with a variety of healthcare providers and facilities to ensure coordinated, equitable care. Through immersion in diverse clinical settings, students expand their cultural competence, professionalism, and leadership capabilities while navigating complex healthcare systems. As the clinical component of NU 426 and NU 428, this course facilitates the integration of theory and practice to support the holistic care of individuals and populations experiencing acute illness.

Note: For each nursing course with an accompanying clinical course a grade of “C” or above is required in the theory course with a minimum grade of C in the associated clinical course in order to progress. If this does not occur, both the theory and the clinical course must be retaken together.
