Program Philosophy
The Master of Arts in Teaching degree provides college students with the following:
- an alternative opportunity to teach in Mississippi secondary schools (7-12);
- mentoring and support for those who wish to teach in Mississippi secondary schools; and
- the coursework, knowledge, and field experiences necessary to become a licensed and successful secondary school teacher.
Thirty-six (36) hours are required for a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. MAT students must have been employed by a school district within a forty mile radius of MUW for one year prior to completion of the degree program. Upon successful completion of the 36 hours in the program, candidates will be eligible for a class AA standard alternate route Mississippi license.

Pre-teaching Required Courses:
(taught the summer before the Internship) Upon completion of ED 549 and ED 551 below, candidates will be eligible for a special Mississippi alternate route license which is good for three years. In addition, ED 538 Understanding Individual Learning Differences should be taken during the first summer. Internship Phase:
To complete the Internship, candidates must hold a teaching position. If such a position is not obtained, candidates may continue only with core courses in the graduate program. Additional Graduate Courses for AA Licensure and Degree Completion:
