FLS 390 - Spanish Service-Learning Internship

Credits: 3

Prerequisite: FLS 202  or FLS 203  or permission of the Department Chair of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy

This internship is designed as a substantial and reasonable counterpart to the rich study abroad experience, a requirement for Spanish majors.  This allows any student unable to travel out of the country to be able to fulfill part of this graduation prerequisite through service, heightening the student’s language acquisition and cultural sensibilities skills for the benefit of their local communities.  As an important component of the experience is that the student creates a bridge between the Spanish program, each site, and individuals through direct interaction.  The internship is designed as a reflective, student-centered process.  By the end of the semester, the intern would have invested 120-hours of service, with elements of theory, under the guidance of a faculty member in the Spanish program.  The intern will culminate their time of service disseminating important findings to other members of the W community.
