MA 111 - Modern Elementary Mathematics I

Credits: 3

This course develops conceptual understanding of the real number system for prospective elementary teachers, including set theory, numeration systems, number theory, and the properties and operations of real numbers. Candidates engage in mathematical reasoning through models, representations, logic, and problem-solving strategies aligned with K-6 CCRS progressions. Emphasis is placed on analyzing student thinking, addressing misconceptions, and using mathematically appropriate discourse. Course content aligns with National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and in TASC expectations for content knowledge.

Note: Elementary Education majors may take this course a maximum of two times and must earn a minimum grade of C.
