ED 523 - Early Literacy ICredits: 3
This course provides a scientifically based foundation in the cognitive, sociocultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on literacy and language development. The course will address essential skills and concepts concerning language development, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Topics include understanding reading research with an evidence-based, comprehensive perspective for understanding how reading develops, the sequence of learning to read, the essential components of reading instruction, and the most effective approaches to teaching reading across the grade bands. The components, methods, and strategies this course will focus on include phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonics. Principles of Structured Literacy instruction for these foundational reading and writing components are studied and practiced.
Note: This course requires students to conduct related practice in their own school or specified field settings.
