POL 330 - Nonprofit Advocacy & Government RelationsCredits: 3
In this class, students will learn about the policymaking process and the strategies pursued by advocacy organizations in the US and other advanced democracies as they seek to influence policy decisions that bear on their missions. This will include both inside and outside lobbying, including how public advocacy and grassroots organizing (outside lobbying) interact with interventions in the legislative, executive, and judicial branches to maximize an organization’s impact on policy decisions. In addition, students will explore the ethical ramifications of interest group activity from the perspective of democratic theory. The course will include an active-learning component that includes interaction with professionals working with nonprofits and advocacy organizations in Mississippi, including community organizers and government relations specialists
