9.1 BIT TEAM MISSION
The Behavioral Intervention Team, known as the BIT Team, is a group of staff members from various departments across campus who meet regularly to assist students experiencing difficulty and to help ensure the safety of our campus.
The mission of The W’s Behavior Intervention Team (BIT) is to promote student, faculty and staff success and campus safety by identifying individuals who demonstrate behaviors that may be early warning signs of possible disruptive or violent behavior and intervene at the earliest possible point.
The BIT team’s goal is to successfully engage, support, and minimize the concerns associated with students in distress. Accomplishing these goals requires a coordinated institutional response that includes all members of The W community.
The mission of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is to:
- Proactively build and sustain community with a comprehensive, collaborative team that identifies behaviors that are a risk of harm to self or others.
- Provide structure for an effective method of addressing student behaviors that impact the University.
- Promote campus safety by fostering a culture of reporting.
- Help and support via educational, rather than punitive means, according to an established protocol and transparent procedures.
- Provide training and education to promote student and community success and development.
- Assess, evaluate, and evolve team function and protocols over time as best practices are identified and refined.
- Be a resource for students, faculty, administration, and staff.
The university’s Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) receives reports of disruptive, problematic, threatening, or concerning behavior via the university online reporting tool. The team meets and assesses concerns and determines the best response for the individual and community. The team will follow up with reporter and provide support when necessary.
The BIT Team places a high priority on balancing an individuals’ right to privacy with the university’s duty to respond to people experiencing difficulty or expressing at-risk behaviors. The BIT Team’s primary objective is to connect students with the support and resources they need to be healthy and productive members of our campus community.
9.2 WHEN TO REPORT
When to Report:
A BIT report may be sent at any time by utilizing the online general incident form (www.muw.edu/reporting). The report will be sent directly to the Chair of the BIT team.
